2 There has thus for a long time been a desire to increase the capacity of adjusting plants or similar sorting plants by eliminating the need for step feeders as much as possible.
However, the present invention solves the problem of the step feeders by a solution where the need for them can be reduced.
The object of the present invention is thus to provide a method and an apparatus which make it possible to eliminate the need for step-feeders, or at least substantially reduce the total need for step-feeders when sorting, in particular in the case of coarser wood, in order to thereby substantially increase capacity at sawmills and timber handling facilities. Among the many advantages, the device offers the great advantage that the total capacity of the plant can be greatly increased with many timber dimensions.
These two objects of the invention are solved by a method which exhibits the features and characteristics stated in claim 1, respectively a device of the kind specified in the characterizing part of claim 5. Further features and advantages of the invention appear from the subclaims.
In the following, the invention is described in more detail with reference to an exemplary embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings, in which fl g¿ shows a side view of a device according to the invention, fi gi shows a plan view of the device according to Fig. 1.
In the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 there is a sorting plant known per se with vertical timber compartments 1 so-called sink compartment which is delimited on the sides by vertical carriers 2 and is provided with a bottom vertically movable in the compartment formed by bottom means 3, which when the compartment is filled with pieces of wood are delivered in the form of a bundle 4, a so-called bundle of intoxicants to a first transverse conveyor 5 located below the compartment for transporting the pieces of wood across their longitudinal direction, in the direction shown by the arrow.
As best seen in Fig. 2, the first transverse conveyor 5 is a chain conveyor comprising primary transport elements 6 in the form of endless conveyor chains, without upright carriers, but may instead of chains be provided with belts or the like.
The chains 6 are placed mutually parallel in four rows across the conveying direction of the conveyor and running on beams which are supported by a frame included in the conveyor. Said primary transport element 6 is driven by means of sprocket 8 for all in a series of parallel transport elements with common drive shafts 9. The drive shafts 9 are connected via a chain 10 to a motor 11, which is thus common to said primary transport element 6. In the transport direction after the first transverse conveyor 5 for sorting the timber bundle 4, a station with a step feeder 12 comprising a number of fixed stretcher means 13 and movable stretcher means 14 arranged in a wavy or toothed profile of alternating peaks and valleys (pockets). The advanced bundle of pieces of timber 4 falls off from the first W ' Other Casedocuments Patent P409- P40900999SE00 090514 besk.doc 10 15 20 25 30 35 3 the transverse conveyor 5 down on the inclined plane 15 and from there - further down to the step feeder 12. By means of the movable support means 14 pieces of wood are lifted one by one out of a bundle of timber into the pockets and are moved successively forward by the effect of an eccentric movement between the means by being lowered into a front pocket. The timber pieces are then fed further for one-piece division to an elevator 16 located downstream of the step feeder 12 comprising a number and at least two parallel conveyor chains 17 with equally spaced carriers 18. After sorting in the elevator 16, the timber pieces are fed to a second cross conveyor 19 intended for further transport and treatment. of the timber pieces (not shown).
It should be understood that since elevators can also serve as buffer zones in sorting plants, the above-mentioned elevator 16 may, when appropriate, be accompanied by at least one further downstream arranged elevator.
By sorting devices for elongate timber pieces having a number of fixed and movable term step feeders, as used herein is generally meant support means arranged in wavy or toothed profile of alternating peaks and valleys (pockets) with which individual pieces of timber from a bundle are successively fed substantially horizontally forward.
By sorting devices which, from an assembled bundle of timber or a formed buffer layer which by means of, in the term elevator, as used herein, is generally meant an endless path running conveyor, individual pieces of timber lift one at a time substantially vertically out of a bundle.
According to the invention, the first transverse conveyor 5 is divided into a first and a second section, generally designated 20 and 21, respectively, which sections are considered separate units and can be slidably displaced in the conveying direction parallel in opposite directions relative to each other so that the total effective conveying length of the conveyor can be varied. The device according to the invention here comprises a number of secondary transport elements 22 arranged for the primary transport elements 6, which also consist of chains without carriers, alternatively belts or the like.
As best seen in Fig. 2, said secondary conveying elements 22 are placed mutually parallel in four rows across the conveying direction of the conveyor, each in close proximity to a respective primary conveying element 6. The number of rows for both the primary and secondary conveying elements 6, 22 can be varied depending on which lengths of wood the plant is intended to handle. Similar to the first section 20 described above, the secondary transport element 22 of the second section 21 is driven by means of sprocket 23 for all in a series of parallel transport elements with common drive shafts 24. The drive shafts 24 are connected via a chain 25 to a motor 26, which is common for said secondary transport elements 22. Said respective drive motor 11, 26 with associated transmissions for driving the primary and the secondary W: Other Casedocuments Patents P409- P40900999SE00 090514 besk.doc 10 15 20 25 30 35 4 4 transport elements 6, 22 included in the first and second sections 20, 21, respectively, are so synchronized that the primary and secondary transport elements are driven at the same or synchronous speed.
In order that the primary and secondary transport elements 20, 21 can be telescopically extended by being displaced relative to each other in the transport direction of the timber pieces, said secondary transport elements 22 are supported by a frame which forms part of the above-mentioned second section 21 and via guides 27 extending on rails 28 in the longitudinal direction of the transport elements, is slidably guided to the first section 20. Between the two sections 20, 21, actuators and actuators 29 are arranged which, in the example shown, consist of hydraulic cylinders, but could alternatively consist of any known actuators and maneuvers, for example carbon nut screws, electric drive motors with assigned transmission for, for example, chain drive or the like. The linearly set length of the actuators and actuators 29 thus determines the mutual position between the respective sections 20, 21 and consequently also the total effective length of the primary and secondary transport elements, for feeding timber pieces. By adjusting the linear length of the actuator 29, the total length of the first cross conveyor 5 can be varied between the two in fi g. 1 denoted the lengths L1 and L2 and thereby adjusted for transporting interaction with the step feeder 12 or the elevator 16.
When emptying a bundle of timber 4 from a timber compartment 1, with such coarse timber dimensions down on the first cross conveyor 5 that sorting by means of step feeders 12 is not required, the first cross conveyor is switched, by the action of the actuators 29, to its extended position L2 it by directly bridging the step feeder 12 reaches directly to the subsequent elevator 16 for sorting the bundle of timber 4 therein. From elevator 16, the sorted pieces of wood are fed to the subsequent second cross conveyor 19 for further transport and handling.
When emptying a bundle of timber 4 from a timber compartment 1, with such small dimensions that pieces of timber in the bundle tend to intersect on top of each other and become so tangled in each other that the bundle becomes extremely difficult to disassemble, the first cross conveyor 5 is rearranged in its shorter, retracted position L1 by the action of the actuators and actuators 29. Hereby the timber pieces are first led to sorting in the step feeder 12 and then from this to sorting in the subsequent elevator 16. From the elevator 16 the sorted timber pieces are fed to the subsequent second cross conveyor 19 for further transport and handling.
By making the present invention possible to bridge the step feeder 12 and direct coarser timber dimensions directly to the subsequent elevator 16 for sorting, the need for step feeds at coarser timber dimensions is eliminated.
W: Other_Casedocuments Patent P409- P40900999EN00 O90514 besk.doc 5 The relatively high capacity of the elevator 16 can hereby be utilized at all the times when the timber dimensions allow this. Among the many advantages, the device offers the great advantage that the total capacity of the plant can be greatly increased with many timber dimensions, in particular with the dissolution of bundles of coarser timber dimensions.
The present invention is not limited to what is described above and that shown in the drawings, but can be changed and modified in a number of different ways within the scope of the inventive concept stated in the appended claims.
